Dear little ones,
Light travels fast, doesn't it — fast enough to reach the edge of the solar system in two years. From tiny radishes to bigger radishes, from writing a handful of characters to writing hundreds, from green scarves to red scarves, from first grade to second grade, Mr. Wang and you have walked through two years together. So why does it feel like time moves even faster than light?
The second hand circles 525,600 times to make a year. Two years of school have left behind more memories than I can count. Singing all those English songs with you was one of the greatest joys — thank you for going along with it. "Blitzen Boogie" was lively and full of laughter; "The Secret of the Golden Bricks" had you rapping and singing in English at the same time — I really put you through it, didn't I! We watched Interstellar together and felt love cross the dimensions of space. We watched The Fabric of the Cosmos and glimpsed the real universe. We watched The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and debated alien civilisations and spectacularly stupid decisions. We practised calligraphy, copying Wen Zhengming. We visited the Shanghai Museum for the Dong Qichang exhibition. We built our own planets! All of Mr. Wang's rambling nonsense was perfectly absorbed by your innocence. What a happy two years — thank you so much.
Just as no one in the world can draw a perfectly perfect circle, there is no such thing as flawless perfection; things will always encounter interference from the outside. Starting in third grade, you will meet a new teacher. She will be quite different from me, and that is completely normal. Every person has their own way of shining. Your job is to discover it. I believe — and I hope you believe too — that your new teacher will bring fresh energy and a new atmosphere.
As for regrets, there are always some. We only reached the fourth poem in Wen Zhengming's "Falling Flowers." Our exploration of the universe and science had barely taken its first step. And I won't be able to take you all to the Shanghai Planetarium after all…
In the course of a life, every living person will face many partings. A baby plant leaves its mother to travel. A caterpillar becomes a butterfly and then wanders the flowers alone. This is the natural order of all things.
Do you remember what it says in When the World Was Young? It is also what Mr. Wang most wants to tell you: change often arrives without warning — all you need to know is what you do best.
Teacher Wang
